GROUP FOR THE EAST END AWARDED GRANTS TO RESTORE THE PECONIC ESTUARY
Funds Will Be Used for Habitat Restoration, Educational Outreach and Stormwater Remediation

April 19, 2010, Southold, NY – Group for the East End (www.eastendenvironment.org) is proud to report the organization has been awarded three mini-grants from the Peconic Estuary Program. These mini-grants (up to $5,000 per project) fund projects that increase public awareness of the estuarine environment and/or encourage active public participation in protecting and restoring the Peconic Estuary.

First among the four projects to be implemented by Group for the East End is an expansion of the organization’s Spring Planting Program. The program will educate students and community volunteers and focus on community based, hands-on habitat restoration projects within the Peconic Estuary watershed. Matching donations to support the program can be mailed to: Group for the East End, P.O. Box 569, Bridgehampton, NY 11932.

The second project is a partnership between Group for the East End and the Southampton Town Trustees, to create an educational brochure about eelgrass, a threatened native aquatic plant species that provides habitat for local estuarine life. The brochure will highlight the importance of eelgrass and serve as an educational resource for the public. It will be widely distributed and will also be available on the web.

On the North Fork, Group for the East End will collaborate with the Gardiners Bay Estates Homeowners Association in East Marion to mitigate stormwater pollution at the Spring Pond boat ramp. The project calls for installation of pervious surface in place of the existing impermeable boat ramp and a restoration of the property surrounding the ramp using native plant species. This project will include ongoing education and outreach to benefit 100+ homeowners in the area who utilize the ramp.

On the South Fork, Children’s Museum of the East End (CMEE) will create an educational walking trail through six acres of natural area on their property. Group for the East End helped to develop the concept for this trail and will be assisting with the project as it progresses.

“With funding support from the Peconic Estuary Program this year, we are able to expand our efforts to protect and restore the Peconic Estuary – one of our greatest natural resources on eastern Long Island. We are so proud to have received such tremendous support in 2010 and plan to make a positive impact throughout the East End,” noted Jennifer Skilbred, a Group for the East End Environmental Advocate who also serves as the PEP Education & Outreach Coordinator.
