State University to Dump Environmental Campus at Southampton

Yesterday, Stony Brook University’s new President Samuel Stanley stunned several hundred confused and saddened students by announcing his plan to essentially shut down the State University’s brand new environmental campus in Southampton. In the face of pending state budget cuts, Stony Brook’s new leadership claims it cannot sustain the campus that, ironically, hosted the university’s Sustainability Studies programs. Campus Dedicated to Sustainability Never Given a Chance
Just a few years ago, the East End community rallied behind Stony Brook University to save Southampton College from closure. Under its prior President Shirley Strum Kenny, Stony Brook agreed to take the campus over and invested $35 million in renovations and began a courageous effort to create a campus curriculum with heavy focus on conservation and sustainability. Students feel they were never given a chance to build the campus to its full potential. Click here for the Southampton Press coverage.

Campus Produces Volunteers, Interns, Future Employees
Over the years, the Group for the East End has recruited many volunteers, interns and professional staff members from Southampton College and recently reestablished that same positive relationship with the new SUNY campus as well. Our region depends on this campus to produce people who understand community planning and the conservation ethic that peacefully links humans and the natural environment on the East End.

Closure Will Negatively Impact Local Economy and Education
The Southampton campus contributes greatly to the local economy, from students and faculty who use local services and dine out in local restaurants to graduates who remain in the area and become part of our community. In addition, some local young members of the community rely on the university as a feasible means of achieving higher education close to home. While closing Stony Brook Southampton may appear a tempting short term solution, that action lacks a robust vision for the future for both Stony Brook and the East End. A better solution can be found. Give our community the opportunity to show it's support of the school. Too many wonderful, promising things for students, the environement, our region will not come to pass. Look for other solutions, rather than presenting us with a fait accompli. Thank you, J D Young

Was the secrecy surrounding this decision and the late notification a deliberate strategy to prevent anyone from actually coming up with viable ways to sustain the school? Does Stony Brook have more lucrative offers for the use of its real estate?

I have to wonder if all this is happening because Stonybrook already has bigger plans in the works for this prime, pristine, ocean-front property - maybe something like the deal it has with the Hilton Gardens building a hotel on the main campus?

Students and faculty at Southampton, local elected leaders and the community were not given any advance notice that this campus was ever in danger of losing its residential undergraduate programs. There were no opportunities provided to raise funds or seek other solutions that would help keep the campus as is. Instead, behind closed doors, a decision was made to get the undergraduate students off campus as quickly as possible.

Newsweek quotes President Stanley as saying that Stony Brook University ".....is seeking new educational uses for its Southampton campus as it prepares to close dorms and disband... classes there.." That makes no sense. Why eliminate the current new, cutting-edge educational uses just to start looking for educational uses? What might those new educational uses be?

At the main campus, Stonybrook is planning an evironmentally-sound, L.E.E.D.-certified Hilton Gardens hotel with 135 rooms, a pool, and 5,000 square feet of meeting space "to accommodate Stonybrook University guests and visitors to educational conferences and symposia". According to the SB website, the university will lease it to the developers for a fee of $100,000 per year, plus an annual 3 percent escalation fee and equity shares in the hotel.

Is this the kind of "new educational use" being planned for the beautiful, prime ocean-front property at Southampton? Are the dorms going to be converted into expensive Hamptons hotel rooms?

Given the secrecy surrounding the decision and Stony Brook's refusal to allow time for other alternatives to be explored to keep Southampton as is, it is not difficult to see why one might be suspicious of an ulterior motive. It gives the impression that the sudden closure decision may be a case of Stonybrook officials recognizing the value of this campus' location and coming to the conclusion that this gorgeous property in the Hamptons need not be "wasted" on undergraduate students when so much more lucrative deals can be made.

If that truly turns out to be the root of all this disruption, I'll sign on to that citizens' legal action to get back from Stony Brook every penny of our public funds investment --- plus interest.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

As long as you remain a full-time student, you will continue to qualify for "in-school deferment". You won't have to begin paying your loans back until you finish law school. The only requirement is that you remain registered at least half-time at an eligible institution, and that you don't take more than 6 months off at any time during your schooling. By the way - this is an automatic feature of government-backed student loans (Stafford/Perkins/PLUS), but it is not necessarily characteristic of all private loans. Also remember that the in-school deferment requires attendance at an "eligible" school. Some students have pursued law or medical degrees at foreign universities, only to discover that some of these schools are not participants in the Federal Student Aid program, and therefore, ineligible for in-school deferment.
