Springs Students Face The Great Migration Challenge

Group Educators Teach Students About Migration
On March 4th, 2010 I observed a classroom lesson for our TERN (Teaching Environmental Responsibility Now) students conducted by Steve Biasetti, Group for the East End’s Director of Environmental Education. Steve started out by challenging the students as reporters, thinking about the “who, what, when, where, why and how” of migration. He wrote down their brainstormed answers on the board until it was filled with information. Click here for photos.

Let the Games Begin: The Great Migration Challenge
As a reward for their brainstorming diligence, students were treated to The Great Migration Challenge game, where they transformed into different migratory birds in order to experience the real challenges animals might face while traveling from one place to another. Each student was able to play the game three or four times each, changing characters each time and reporting whether or not they survived. Some were eaten by cats or encountered a poisoned water supply (they didn’t make it), but many caught favorable trade winds or found shelter at a nature preserve in order to complete their migration. What a terrific lesson – the kids loved it!

Migrate with Family and Friends on March 20th, 2010
If you have never played The Great Migration Challenge, you don’t know what you are missing! Join Group for the East End and the Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons on March 20th, when we’ll play the game again with families and friends training to become “Team Wild Stars” – volunteers qualified to recognize and report injured wild animals for rehabilitation. The program will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Mattituck High School.

In an article published by the American Cancer Society on June 14th 2010, it says that over two million cancer survivors had to cancel receiving care for their needed medical treatment due to rising costs. This is horrible and we need a new way of doing healthcare..and soon!
