2010 Winter E-News: Species Spotlight: The Grasshopper Sparrow

by Group Staff 4. January 2010 09:03

By Jennifer Skilbred

This recurring column will highlight the variety of species that rely on the Calverton Grasslands and are now being threatened by massive development proposals slated for the Enterprise Park at Calverton (EPCAL). As the Group works to protect these species and limit development of this unique site, we want to shine some light on these fascinating animals.

This season’s highlighted New York State Species of Special Concern is the Grasshopper Sparrow. Although local populations are now off to their wintering grounds in the south, these birds commonly breed at the Calverton Grasslands -- a grassland habitat that is now rare on Long Island. The Grasshopper Sparrow gets its name not only from its diet, but also from its insect-like “buzzy” song. The birds are quite secretive and are most often heard but not seen. They are small, stocky sparrows with a flat head and short tail.

When foraging, Grasshopper Sparrows walk or run along the ground and feed on grass seeds as well as insects (mostly grasshoppers) as they go. They are ground nesters, building relatively elaborate nests out of grass blades. Sometimes you will see a dome created of bent grass over the top of the nest, creating an entrance on one side. Unfortunately, ground nesting leaves these birds more vulnerable to human interference.

Grasshopper Sparrows are listed at varying levels of protection in most northeastern states and many states throughout the eastern United States. According to the Audubon Society, there has been a 65% decline in Grasshopper Sparrows throughout the world over the past 40 years. Habitat loss, fragmentation, degradation, pesticide use, and poor land management have all played a role in this decline. In order to conserve New York’s Grasshopper Sparrow population, large open grassland sites must be protected and appropriately managed as breeding sites.

The Calverton Grasslands are thought to be the largest remaining contiguous grassland habitat on Long Island. The ~800 acres of grassland present there are home and breeding grounds to numerous grassland species, including the Grasshopper Sparrow. Right now, the Calverton Grassland habitat is being threatened by a development application that proposes a mega resort complex, industrial buildings, and a 90-acre manmade lake. This loss of habitat could easily result in the extinction of these and other unique species in our area.

Definitely agree with what you stated. Your explanation was certainly the easiest to understand. I tell you, I usually get irked when folks discuss issues that they plainly do not know about.
