2010 Winter E-News: Challenge Grants Enable Worthy Projects

Nothing could be better for the East End than remarkably-committed citizen organizations that are dedicated to protecting the local environment. In exceptional circumstances, Group for the East End sponsors challenge grants designed to help them achieve their goals. This fall, the Marion Lake Restoration Committee and the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund were the recipients of $5,000 and $7,500 challenge grants respectively. The Group was pleased and excited to play a role in their efforts and we look forward to our ongoing partnerships.

The Marion Lake Restoration Committee is a non-profit organization that hopes to transform and restore Marion Lake in East Marion. The Committee was successful in securing some New York State funding for the removal of Phragmites austrailis, a non-native invasive wetland plant. Committee members also invested their own resources and time to improve the overall environmental health of Marion Lake, which drains into the Peconic Estuary. After several rounds of Phragmites removal, the Committee realized they would need additional funding to complete the project and restore native wetland species. The Group stepped in with a $5,000 challenge grant that will help pay for additional plantings this spring. Check out the Marion Lake Restoration Committee’s blog site for more details.

The New Suffolk Waterfront Fund (NSWF) has created a plan to protect a 3.4-acre waterfront parcel in New Suffolk. Knowing the parcel would forever face significant development pressure, they secured an option to purchase the property and develop a responsible plan to preserve open space, public access and the historic value of the property. In just two years, the NSWF successfully raised over $1.2 million, but they must raise an additional $1.4 million by December 2010, in order to take possession of the property. The Group recognized this hefty challenge and offered a $7,500 challenge grant to raise an additional $15,000 towards the remaining balance. Earlier this year, we organized a successful native planting at the site and we also participated in "A Day in New Suffolk" this summer. Good morning, I was scanning something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read earlier. I am still pondering over the opposite points of view, but I'm leaning to a great extent toward yours. And irrespective, that's what is so great about modern-day democracy and the marketplace of ideas online.
