2010 Winter E-News: A Year of Environmental Education: 2008-2009 Report

by Group Staff 4. January 2010 09:01

By Steve Biasetti

Group for the East End’s environmental education programs are definitely a team effort. In a typical year, every Group staffer is actively involved to some degree in at least one of the organization’s four main educational endeavors: 1) School Education, 2) Summer Field Ecology, 3) Spring Plantings & Habitat Restorations, and 4) Nature Explorations.

Our environmental education programs follow a similar pattern each year. Group educators are in the field by mid-September, shortly after school begins, conducting outdoor lessons with classes from East End schools. Field trips dominate our schedule into early December, especially if the weather allows (as it did in autumn 2009). Field trips often investigate the physical and living aspects of four common ecosystems encountered on eastern Long Island: beach/dune, salt marsh, freshwater pond, and forest.

From mid-December through mid-March we switch venues to the classroom, teaching interactive indoor lessons on such topics as Long Island’s geological history, groundwater, tides, ecology, taxonomic classification of animals, animal adaptations, and wildlife migration. As soon as the calendar turns to spring, however, we are outdoors again conducting field lessons at a dizzying pace until school ends in June.

Sprinkled into the spring schedule is a healthy dose of Plantings & Habitat Restorations, commencing in April and continuing through May. As soon as the school year ends, Group educators turn attention to the Summer Field Ecology Program, running four-day sessions for children of different ages throughout July and August. Nature Explorations round out the Group education calendar, as we offer at least a few events each and every month of the year.

With assistance from the entire staff, the recent twelve-month period was a busy and productive time for the Group’s environmental educators. We taught classes in 15 schools on eastern Long Island in the 2008-2009 academic year, from Montauk to Southampton to Greenport. In total, more than 160 lessons were conducted, with roughly 60% taking place outdoors on field trips. Nearly 3,100 students – ranging from kindergarten through high school – attended these lessons and benefited from our unique style of interactive, conservation-oriented, place-based education.

We partnered with another five schools for our Spring Plantings & Habitat Restorations, in which nine projects were successfully completed from Montauk to Tuckahoe to Shelter Island to Southold. About 260 school children and community members participated in these projects in spring 2009. During the summer 2009 season, the Group held five sessions of Field Ecology for 43 children and teenagers. The Group’s Nature Explorations attracted approximately 520 participants to 36 events over the year, which included activities ranging from nature walks to paddling trips to beach cleanups to wildlife searches and quiz nights.

All told, Group for the East End’s environmental education programs were a full-staff effort that engaged more than 4,000 students, local citizens, and visitors in the past year alone. Whether in the classroom or on a field trip, during a planting or a nature walk, all of these activities were designed to cultivate interest and wonder for our natural surroundings, build a foundation for appreciating the values of local natural resources, and instill a sense of responsibility for living harmoniously with the environment.

For more information on the Group’s environmental education programs, please contact Steve Biasetti at 631-765-6450, ext. 205 or sbiasetti@eastendenvironment.org.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
