2010 Winter E-news: Peconic Estuary Program Update

by Group Staff 4. January 2010 09:10

By Jennifer Skilbred

Did you know that Group for the East End coordinates education and outreach for the Peconic Estuary Program (PEP)? This year, we are disseminating information about the two most recently adopted management plans, working with PEP members to organize the 2010 State of the Bays Conference, and developing many other exciting outreach programs.

Two Peconic Estuary Program management plans were approved in 2009 -- an updated version of the Habitat Restoration Plan and an Eelgrass Management Plan for the Peconics. The Group has weighed in on the development of both strategies and will continue to ensure that important recommendations move forward.

The 2009 PEP Habitat Restoration Plan is an update to the Habitat Restoration Plan adopted in 2000. It reviews past projects, identifies additional restoration needs, and establishes strategies and partnerships for restoring degraded sites. Some projects included in the plan are: improving fish passages; restoring dune systems, wetlands, and eelgrass beds; controlling invasive plants; and attempting to restore shellfish populations. They will be initiated in all five East End Towns, including: Silver Lake in Greenport, Ligonee Brook in Sag Harbor, Napeague Harbor in East Hampton, Shell Beach in Shelter Island, and Peconic Lake in Riverhead.

The Eelgrass Management Plan for the Peconic Estuary aims to rebuild eelgrass populations. Eelgrass is especially important because it provides habitat for the economically important Peconic Bay Scallop and other valuable shellfish. Eelgrass also stabilizes the bay bottom, improves water quality, provides food and habitat, and is a key species to one of the most biodiverse community types on Earth. Action items in this plan include: improving water quality conditions to promote eelgrass growth, minimizing and mitigating the impacts of shoreline hardening, and developing an awareness program to educate the public about protecting local seagrass beds.

To ramp up excitement for these recent initiatives, the Group and the PEP are planning a 2010 State of the Bays Conference. Discussions will focus on implementing the plans adopted in 2009, explore the many challenges facing the bay, and propose potential solutions to environmental issues. The Conference will be held this spring, and a new Peconic Estuary educational video will be unveiled. Along with environmentalists, scientists and community members, elected officials will be invited to share their ideas for a comprehensive strategy to protect the Peconic Estuary. Keep an eye out for announcements about the upcoming 2010 PEP State of the Bays Conference. We hope to see you there!
