ACTION ALERT: Southampton Town Dark Skies Legislation Under Fire!

by Group Staff 18. November 2009 01:08

What's Happening: This past June, Southampton Town Councilwoman Nancy Graboski introduced Dark Skies legislation with the intent to reduce energy consumption, protect the environment, public health, safety and preserve the view of the nighttime sky.

The proposed legislation garnered widespread public support. Over 500 residents have signed a petition in favor of the legislation and the Town's files contain at least 60 letters and e-mails in support. The Town's Planning Board is in favor and dark skies legislation has been implemented in other East End towns.

The Problem: Unfortunately, over the last 5 months and 8 public hearings, in an effort to appease some vociferous local business opponents (whose comments have been largely outweighed by public support for the law) the Town Board has removed critical elements of this worthy legislative initiative and allowed a proposal with widespread public support and demonstrated conservation value, to be run into the ground. One such element was the sunset provision which effectively addresses existing sources of light pollution over time.

As the 9th public hearing approaches, the proposed Dark Skies legislation is again in jeopardy. Without your support, the proposal will either be voted down or substantially weakened.

What You Can Do:

Please attend the hearing (Tuesday, November 24th at 6:00 p.m.) at Southampton Town Hall and express your support for comprehensive dark skies legislation.

If you cannot attend the hearing please call or e-mail Town Board members and express your support for a comprehensive law that benefits the Town in its entirety.

Here are some talking points:

  • I fully support Dark Skies legislation and urge the Town Board to pass comprehensive legislation that addressses existing sources of light pollution by including a sunset provision which addresses this problem over a period of time.
  • Dark Skies legislation will help to save energy, protect the environment, public health and safety while preserving the view of our nighttime sky.
  • Southampton Town recently pledged its committment to sustaniability.  Please illustrate this commitment by approving comprehensive dark skies legislation.

Town Board members can be reached at (631) 283-6000.

Councilwoman Anna Throne-Holst: athrone-holst@southamptontownny.gov

Councilman Chris Nuzzi: cnuzzi@southamptontownny.gov
Councilwoman Sally Pope: spope@southamptontownny.gov

Be sure to copy the Town Clerk (sschermeyer@southamptontownny.gov) when you send the e-mail!

Thank you for your support!

how to make money on wow lvl 10-20

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
