NEWS: WATERWASH™ Draws a Crowd

by Group Staff 12. November 2009 11:39

While many people identify water as a primary ingredient for washing, have you ever pondered the fact that water itself may need to be washed?

I spent the past few months collaborating with Lillian Ball, a local environmental activist and artist, who recognized that contaminants from Route 48 in Mattituck were streaming into the water every time it rained. This dirty water was polluting Mattituck Creek, which connects directly to Long Island Sound.

A love for this natural area inspired Lillian to develop a solution in the form of a curvaceous permeable recycled glass pavement and sweeping vegetated swale. The permeable surface allows water to flow downward and through the swale, so native plants can clean the water before it returns to the creek.

Early in 2009, Lillian secured funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Long Island Sound Futures Fund, but she needed a partner to receive the grant. That’s where Group for the East End stepped in to help. Lillian had a plan and vision, but needed an organization to back her up. Our staff members and volunteers were energized by her enthusiasm, helping to plant native species in the swale, spread mulch, and remove litter – whatever it took.

WATERWASH™ officially opened to the public on Monday, November 9th. In total, approximately 50 community members, elected officials, and media representatives attended – quite the crowd for a small community project! (Is this a prediction of more to come? I think so!). It may be hard to imagine glass as a replacement for asphalt, but believe me it works. To prove that the Filterpave is a functional permeable surface, Lillian poured out a bucket of water and we all stood back to watch as the liquid disappeared. I would encourage you to stop by the site and see for yourself this innovative solution to stormwater pollution (feel free to bring your own bucket if you are the curious type!).
