NEWS: Successful Beach Cleanup!

Last month, Group staff and volunteers participated in International Coastal Cleanup Day (September 19th) by cleaning up a stretch of beach in East Marion. International Coastal Cleanup Day, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy, is truly a unique global effort in that volunteers are asked to carefully record and compile data on the amount and type of garbage collected. Each year, reports are generated and used as a means of targeting solutions to end the problem of ocean debris. Last year, 400,000 volunteers from around the world collected more than 6.8 million pounds of trash. What Did We Learn in Our Corner of the Globe?

What is rewarding about beach cleanups is also saddening. After a mere one and a half hours, 6 garbage bags were stuffed to the brim with everything from a cheese slicer to nearly 200 plastic bottle caps. Bottle caps, plastic bottles, foodwrappers and plastic bags were the top offenders. The stretch of beach was fairly remote, which means that most of the debris had probably washed ashore. Although there is a pretty good chance that the garbage collected that day wasn’t our personal garbage, each of us has purchased plastic water bottles, used a plastic disposable grocery bag or eaten a Twix candy bar. Who knows? Perhaps our garbage washed up on a beach in Connecticut or down on the coast of South America. Participating in beach clean-ups always helps to reaffirm the following: recycle everything that is recyclable, try to reuse beverage containers, definitely switch to reusable grocery bags and try to buy food products in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging that is needed. Additionally, support state legislation such as the Bigger Better Bottle Bill to help incentivize plastic juice and water bottle recycling.
