ACTION ALERT: Toxic Groundwater Plume Threatens Peconic River

Potentially hazardous chemicals (including several toxic solvents) left behind from the Navy’s former weapons facility at the EPCAL site in Riverhead are currently flowing through Calverton’s groundwater, away from the EPCAL property and towards the Peconic River. These volatile organic compounds (known as VOCs) will decrease water quality, and pollute valuable habitat throughout the Peconic River, much of which is protected by New York State under the Wild, Scenic, and Recreational Rivers Act.

VOCs can have negative health impacts for humans as well. So far, the compounds contained in this toxic plume have already contaminated one drinking well at a nearby sportsman’s club and, while the plume is not yet threatening any surrounding residences, the deeper these chemicals get in the groundwater the further they may travel and potentially contaminate more drinking water.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has been investigating the scope of this plume, and has found major gaps in the Navy’s monitoring and remediation of the site. In fact, their examinations have found that the full extent of this plume is still unknown!

An extraordinary amount of effort, time, and money have been put into protecting and restoring the Peconic Estuary and River, and rightfully so, as this important ecosystem defines the East End way of life. For this and many other reasons, it is completely reprehensible to allow toxic chemicals to remain in our groundwater (which we rely on for drinking water) and continue to move towards this amazing estuarine ecosystem.

TAKE ACTION:

Please contact Congressman Timothy Bishop and Senator Charles Schumer to tell them you are concerned about this plume of contamination. Let them know that you strongly support their efforts to insist the Navy pay for all clean-up and monitoring. Urge them to continue to put pressure on the Navy to clean up up the site as soon as possible.

We don't need to pay for more toxic clean ups when the site users get away scott free. We are already suffering tax burdens in excess of what most Americans face and these clean ups only add to the burden. Its time to hold all land abusers accountable.
