ACTION ALERT: New Senate Bill Puts Marine Life at Risk

The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA), which governs America’s commercial fisheries, was re-authorized in 2006 with broad public support. The Act required an end to overfishing and a timeline to rebuild depleted fish stocks. We have already seen signs of success through this bill with improvement in the summer flounder fish stocks. Now, the Act is being threatened by a new Senate bill!

Unfortunately, Senator Charles Schumer recently introduced the “Flexibility in Rebuilding American Fisheries Act of 2009,” which creates numerous loopholes in the MSA and egregiously extends deadlines for rebuilding threatened fish stocks. The bill adds five fairly vague clauses that can be used to extend the ten-year deadline to rebuilding an exploited fishery.

This misguided attempt to assist local commercial fisheries will actually have the opposite affect over time. The legislation will harm the industry in the long term by facilitating poor management of valuable fish stocks.

Senator Schumer’s bill puts short-term economic gains ahead of the long-term impacts on these fish stocks, our marine ecosystems, and thus the entire fishing community.

A 2005 University of British Colombia economic study concluded that the United States could triple the economic value of ocean fish stocks if rebuilding plans are followed. The MSA is a key piece of legislation that correctly focuses on science and conservation and aims to protect our marine ecosystems and the industries that rely on them. Sacrificing conservation to mitigate negative economic impacts will fail all interests in the long run.

We oppose the “Flexibility in Rebuilding American Fisheries Act of 2009" alongside the Peconic Baykeeper and other environmental organizations.

TAKE ACTION:

Contact Senator Schumer as well as Congressman Bishop (who is a co-sponsor of the bill in the House) and let them know that you feel that this legislation is counter to the health of New York’s marine ecosystems, fish population, and the long-term best interests of a sustainable maritime economy.

Ask Senator Schumer and Congressman Bishop to retract these proposed amendments and focus on providing alternative support for struggling fishers while the fisheries they rely on are being rebuilt. Use the web forms below to get your message out:

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. It’s a fair point to use spam-protection and comment-anti-spam systems like Akismet. If your blog is a personal thing then it’s only right that our comments have personality to them. After all, personallity is what makes reading blogs interesting. Keep posting and deleting bad comment that are just negative or doesn't add to the conversation!
