ACTION ALERT: Suffolk County Bill Could Reduce Disposable Bag Litter

There is no debate -- plastic and paper disposable bags provided by retail stores wreak havoc on our environment. Plastic bags plague our waterways, killing tens of thousands of marine animals annually. They litter our natural landscapes and roadways. Worst of all, plastic bags are made from petroleum products, which never completely break down in the environment. Why not ask for paper instead? An estimated 14 million trees are cut down annually for paper bag production!

Who needs disposable bags anyway? Reusable bags are widely available, affordable and last for years!

Suffolk County is Doing Something About It!

The proposed law would significantly reduce the number of disposable retail bags in Suffolk County. As an incentive to use reusable bags as an alternative to disposables, customers who choose to use plastic and paper bags will be charged a five-cent fee. However, the great news is that four out of five of the cents will be designated to the County and dedicated to fund stormwater remediation projects.

Why Sacrifice the Environment for Convenience? There is a national movement to limit the practice of providing disposable bags. In 2009, over ten U.S. states and countless cities including New York and Washington D.C. have proposed similar legislation. It is time that Suffolk County join the ranks and continue to be a leader in environmental protection.

Write to Presiding Officer William Lindsay and express your support for the passage of the legislation.

It is important to teach people to use non disposable bags and it doesn't take much time or training. I have made an effort to shop more responsibly and virtually never use any plastic bags.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
