Volunteering to Remove Phragmites at Marion Lake

by Group Staff 23. June 2010 07:09

By Paul Stoutenburgh, Intern

On what started out as a calm Tuesday morning in the office, I volunteered to jump into the car with my coworkers, Jenn and Kate, to remove some Phragmites (an invasive wetland plant) from the shores of Marion Lake in East Marion, on the North Fork.  Shortly after arriving at Marion Lake, we realized we were underprepared for the intense dirty job ahead of us.

We returned to the office to gear up against the marsh muck and sharp Phragmites stems, and returned to Marion Lake ready for battle.  The Phragmites removal is part of the Marion Lake Project coordinated by the Marion Lake Restoration Committee in collaboration with the New York State DEC.  The Restoration Committee has hired contractors to cut and wick (apply a chemical) to the Phragmites stems, but they are in need of volunteers to help remove the cut pieces of the plant so they can finish the project in time.

2010 Winter E-News: Challenge Grants Enable Worthy Projects

by Group Staff 4. January 2010 09:04

By Jenn Hartnagel

Nothing could be better for the East End than remarkably-committed citizen organizations that are dedicated to protecting the local environment. In exceptional circumstances, Group for the East End sponsors challenge grants designed to help them achieve their goals.  This fall, the Marion Lake Restoration Committee and the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund were the recipients of $5,000 and $7,500 challenge grants respectively. The Group was pleased and excited to play a role in their efforts and we look forward to our ongoing partnerships.

ACTION ALERT: GEE Matching Grant to Benefit The Marion Lake Project

by Group Staff 30. October 2009 05:22

Nothing could be better for our community and the local environment than a group of seriously committed citizens with a vision. The Marion Lake Project has that and more!

Marion Lake (East Marion, NY) was in sad shape, with invasive phragmites suppressing native vegetation and altering wildlife habitat. Luckily, members of The Marion Lake Project (a nonprofit created to restore one of the North Fork's most treasured coastal embayments) have worked tirelessly to improve the health and vitality of Marion Lake. They have secured grant funding from the State of New York, invested their own resources and volunteered their time not only to improve their local environment but also to improve the overall health of the Peconic Estuary, into which Marion Lake drains.

The Marion Lake Project is more than half-way completed,
but critical funding is needed to get the job done as soon as possible!
